A Thrilling Start to the Season

Barthold Kuijken and the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra thrilled the crowd assembled at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis on a sunny Sunday afternoon February 23. Led by the Belgian flautist, the season opening concert focused on the works of four of J.S. Bach’s sons, Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Christoph Friedrich, Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian.
In town for the first of two appearances this season, Barthold had a busy schedule for the week, starting off with media appearances on WISH-TV’s Life.Style.Live and the Classical Beat radio program hosted by Joshua Thompson which aired on WICR and WBAA.
Then came rehearsals and a concert on which he performed as soloist for the finale piece, J. C. Bach’s Flute Concerto in D major.
Critic Jay Harvey attended and included this observation in his review:
“Directing batonless in the tuttis, Kuijken gave special life as well to the solo role. The brief cadenzas had fervor and focus, with a remarkably sustained tone in the middle movement.”
