Easter signals the beginning of spring, of new beginnings and renewed life. Admired by J.S. Bach, Jan Dismas Zelenka was often referred to as the “Czech Bach.” Their mutual admiration and friendship are celebrated in this pairing of two lesser-known works: J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio and Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Paschalis in D. These extravagant compositions with festive trumpets and drums, strings and winds, soloists and chorus, also celebrate the collaborative friendship of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and the Sanctuary Choir of Second Presbyterian Church.
