Step into the vibrant musical world of eighteenth-century France, a period of dramatic change, artistic debate, and cultural exchange. Following the reign of Louis XIV, France’s musical landscape evolved as composers and audiences embraced new ideas from both French and Italian traditions. This program explores the sounds of Paris during the famous Querelle des Bouffons—a spirited debate over French and Italian opera—through works by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Antoine Dauvergne, Johann Stamitz, and Christoph Gluck. Featuring elegant dances, virtuosic instrumental writing, and selections from the French adaptation of Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, the program captures a pivotal moment when Baroque traditions gave way to new Classical ideals.
